DescriptionONE OF THE RAREST FORMS OF EARLY 18TH CENTURY AMERICAN WROUGHT IRON HEARTH WARE.
AN EARLY 18TH CENTURY WROUGHT IRON LONG HANDLED AND FOOTED CAGE \"FISH BROILER\", American, 18th Century, circa 1730-1770, probably New England with a GREAT LONG FOLD OVER WROUGHT IRON HANDLE. THE BOTTOM HAD GREAT FLATTENED PENNY TYPE FEET WITH SIX (6) HAND WROUGHT \" FISH HOOKS\".
The VERY BEST form. PERFECT UNTOUCHED OLD SURFACE AND PATINA. The form itself is extremely rare even in its most simple design.
YOU WOULD PLACE THE FISH INTO THE \"HOOK CAGE\" AND ROAST OR BROIL IT OVER THE FIRE. THE HANDLE NEEDED TO BE LONG ENOUGH TO KEEP YOU AWAY FROM THE FIRE AND STILL BE ABLE TO ADJUST IT. THE FOLD OVER HANDLE WOULD ALLOW YOU TO TURN THE FISH WITHOUT TAKING THE ENTIRE PIECE OUT OF THE HEARTH.
YOU COULD ALSO ROAST MEAT AND BREAD AS WELL.
This is a very important piece of American Iron. BROILERS OF THIS TYPE ARE EXTREMELY RARE AND SOUGHT AFTER.
