Celtic Period Ribbed IronSpear Butt-SAUROTER. The rearof the Celtic spears was capped with a spike called a*SAUROTER*, Greek for\"lizard killer\". It functionally served as a counter-weight to givebalance. This spike had several uses. It could be used to stand the spear up orused as a secondary weapon if the spearhead was broken off.If the shaft of the spearwas broken or if the iron point waslost, the remaining portion could still function. Though its combatrange would be reduced, the spear’s complete length would have lessened thechance of a single break rendering it ineffective.

Considering that the artifact is made from Iron it is in remarkably goodcondition. Professionally cleaned and very good preserved!!! Surface covered with resoluble acrylic film whichprevents any further decay of the metal. Very deadly weapon , need for anycollection. Excellent condition!!! Very RARE in that large sizeand condition!!! In attention of all collectors!!!
