EXTREMELY RARE ENGLISH PEWTER QUART TANKARD KING GEORGE IV CIRCA 1825. VERY TALL:
$195.00

Extremely rare: very few quart tankards from the reign of George IV exist, as he was on the throne for less than a decade. This tankard is stamped with the official Royal Seal of George IV: \"G ♔ IV\". Please see close up photos.Very impressive and imposing design. I acquired this tankard in London and in the 40 years I have been collecting tankards I have never seen anything quite like this.Above the Royal Seal is \"QUART\" and below the Royal Seal is \"IMPERIAL\". Again, please see close up photos. There are other stamps on the tankard: \"♔ B W C\" and \"SOMERSET C°\" and 4 hallmarks which are hard to make out. The first one looks like IWH and the third one looks to be a fox head.George the Fourth was crowned in 1821 and died in 1830 so this pins the date of fabrication down quite nicely.Good condition considering it\'s nearly two hundred years old. At some time the upper handle mount was repaired with pewter, which suggests the repair was made a very long time ago.Given its design and rich history, who knows to whom this substantial tankard may have belonged? Perhaps a member of the aristocracy, perhaps a courtier or nobleman, perhaps a composer or a poet or even a seaman?!Height from base to top of handle: 6 7/8\" (175mm) Width across base: 4 1/2\" (114mm)Totally original and unrestored. Some events during the reign of King George IV of the United Kingdom:1822: The English ship Orion lands at Yerba Buena, now named San Francisco, under the command of William A. Richardson.
1824: King Kamehameha II of Hawaii and his Queen Consort Kamāmalu make a state visit to London.
1829: Felix Mendelssohn pays his first visit to Britain. This includes the first London performance of his concert overture to A Midsummer Night\'s Dream and his trip to Fingal\'s Cave.GOOD LUCK offerDING!
