Fritz Abplanalp was born in 1907 in Brienz.
1907 - 1929 Brienz
1929 - 1935 Glendale, Ohio, USA
1935 - 1968 Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
1968 - 1977 Carmel, California, USA
Fritz attended the Schnitzel School Brienz after the obligatory school years.
His professional future and his future life was determined by a request to the Schnitzel School Brienz.Klara Glauser,
from the well-known merchant family in Interlaken,
looking for a young wooden sculptor who would be able to decorate the church of her community in Glendale, Ohio.
Fritz grabbed the unique opportunity and went to America in 1929.
For a full six years he worked in the church, which he richly decorated with figures and ornaments to make it a real attraction.
In addition to his work, he attended evening classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
1935 Fritz was called to Honolulu to work for S. & G.Gump Company (art dealers)
For the tourists he carved wooden figures and made special orders. In many houses in Honolulu one finds works of Fritz.
He was a member of the Association of Honolulu Artists and participated in exhibitions at the Honolulu Art Academy.
In 1939 he won the first prize with his statue (Hiiaka) and again in 1941 with his statue \"Offering\".
World\'s Fair 1964/65 in New York, he created after old templates those large hand-carved statues of Hawaiian gods, which made him widely known.
The war brought the end of the tourism industry and Fritz had to look for a new job.
In 1942 he became an art teacher at the Kamehameha School for boys.
Fritz Abplanalps art was Hawaiian - with the skill of a Swiss woodcarver.
In 1957, Fritz Abplanalp first returned to his homeland. His art and skillful hand to make masterpieces of wood cartilage,
barks and roots, found in his old home interest and has given many Brienzer colleagues career suggestions.
Thanks to this trip to Brienz, carvings can be found here and there in Brienz houses, unmistakably bearing the mark of his own kind.
After 33 years in Hawaii, he moved with his wife to the artist village Carmel by the Sea (California),
where he continued to work with joy and participated in the exhibitions of the local artists\' colony.
In 1977, Fritz Abplanalp, far away from his home country, died thankful for all the opportunities the new world had offered him.
