Early 1890s Clip-on Glass Canterbury Bell Lantern, Candle Holder. German Orn. For Sale
Early 1890s Glass Clip-onLantern Ornament, Candle Holder. Christmas Tree Ornament.
Lantern in shape of a Canterbury Bell Flower.
This is one of the early glass ornaments, made in Lauscha, Germany. This was a cottage industry, a means for the German families to earn money during the winter when they could not work in the fields. A wonderful heritage in that each ornament is individually finished and a true work of art. These were blown to be used as clip-on ornament Glass Candle Holders.
Very few of them survived as the heat of the candle in a cold unheated parlor often caused the glass to shatter, and the paint would lift somewhat as is the case with this ornament.
It is unsilvered, and molded into the shape of a open rose type candle lantern type shape.
It is in shape of a Canterbury bell flower, with its green sepals at the bottom.
There is the flower bell top, the little petals still closed...all in soft cream color.
Then the pale green sepals of the flower.
The molding is just precious, and this helped to create a higher shade for the candle.
A candle was inserted inside on the prongs of the clip
Then the outside prongs held the glass lantern.
But what a magnificant example of how we would light the tree with candles, and also create a magnificant glass ornament as well as one unit.
3.00" in height, and in really great condition.
Campanula medium, common name Canterbury Bells, also known as the bell flower, is an annual or biennial flowering plant of the genus Campanula, belonging to the family Campanulaceae. In floriography, it represents gratitude, or faith and constancy.
