Up for offer is an early 19th Century French empire-style silver sugar basket with Dutch import marks from the Napoleonic period of French occupation. The basket is 6 inches long by 4 ¼ inches wide and stands 6 ¾ inches tall with the handle up. It weighs 331 grams. The decoration is restrained, with just a flat rope twist rim and a matching band on the handle. It is engraved “Souvenir” on one side. It is marked with a Dutch 1st standard silver mark on the base, a worn French diamond-shape maker’s mark and a “V” Dutch import mark on the foot rim and a Dutch guaranty mark further up on the body. It is also marked [JGS] with another mark on the handle.

Condition on the piece is fairly good. It appears to have been repaired after being badly damaged, so the surface is a bit shiny and the marks are rubbed. There are still a few small dents and irregularities from use and age. A fine old piece of silver!
