This is a leaf of early printingof Early Printing from the Decretales of Pope Gregory IX. Printedby Thielmann Kerver for Jean Petit and Jean Cabiller at Parisin 1505. Gregory IX was also known as Ugolino, Count of Segni.He was born about 1145, at Anagni in the Campagna and died onAugust 22, 1241, at Rome. Gregory promulgated the Decretals in1234, a code of canon law that remained the fundamental sourceof ecclesiastical law for the Catholic Church until after WorldWar I. His most notable achievement was the Canonization of SaintFrancis of Assisi, on August 14, 1228. The quarto size leavesmeasure 220 x 165 mm. in totality and contains various lines oftext surrounded by 67 lines of commentary printed in red and blackink. The versocontains the same type and layout.
