Description
Exceptional early to mid 20th century Akan Peoples, Asante, abusua kuruwa, or Family Pot from Ghana, West Africa. It displays a deep red-brown surface treatment over dark, coarse clay or terracotta. The body is embellished with incised roped highlights below the flared lip and around the belly of the body. There are four stylized frog (?) figures in sculptural relief circling the vessel. There are also two incised circular and two looped symbols residing between frog figures. From the flared foot to the center of the body a petal graphic has been incised in the clay and the space between the petals has been given a subtle textured application to the surface. The lid is topped with a similar stylized frog figure handle as well as a zig-zaging snake in relief along the surface. It is in very good condition with a loss at the foot and at the tip of one of the figures on the body as well as several tiny chips along incising around belly. It measures 8 1/2 inches to the top of the handle.
