Early to Mid 19th Century DUTCH SILVER SNUFF / MINT / MINIATURE BOX w/ FILIGREE:
$75.00

Here is an antique Dutch silver miniature box that I think is either a snuffbox or box for mints/etc. Its hand-engraved on the sides andhas a filigree decorated topwith a slightly rounded bottom which I think made it easier for the user to retrieve the contents in the bottom. Thisbox only measures about 1.75 inches tall, 1.5 inches wideand weighs 31.8 grams. According to the Dutch hallmark on the bottom of the base, the lion passant mark indicates second standard purity minimum of .833. On the right side of the lid is the Minerva head duty mark and on the rim below it are two other hallmarks. One is an unknown maker\'s mark that I was not able to identify and the other looks to be a date letter that I also found no info on. This date letter appears to be a script lower-case letter n that slants to the left. Although the bottom right corner of this letter slants in the opposite direction for some odd reason. Looking at this date letter upside down it appears as a script lower-case letter a that slants to the left with an apparent line break near the top right corner. Like finding the year of production, the city of origin, I havealso not been able to find anything about the silversmith. Even with theSpartan online info about Dutch silver, I do feel quite certain this is Dutch and made sometime around the early to mid 19th century. Dutch silver is usually of 2 purities and I believe the purity is either .833 or possibly .934. I am more doubtful of the .934 purity since this does have thelion passant mark which is often used on .833 pieces. To be at least150 to 200+years old, thisbox only showsminor wear for its age. It looks to be invery goodoverall condition as I seeno repairs or other serious issues. The lid is original although it can be pushed down to where it slightly overlaps the top rim of the front side. Its only other issues are some light scratches and some tiny dents/dings. I think a silver repair expert could fix the lid overlap and remove all or most of the tiny dents/dings. Any bright white spots are just reflections from the light. NC buyers must pay 7% NC sales tax unless they have a valid NCantiques or re-seller dealer tax number.
