This stone moai sculpture was bought on Easter island by my parents during the opening of the Mataveri Airport at Hangaroa in 1967. The piece is 11 inches high, the weight is 1650 grams. Is is a exact representation of the big ancient moai, with eyes made of obsidian and bone and a red stone head ( pukao ). Early scientists like Thor Heyerdahl considered 20th century works like theese as worthless. Today it is widely believed that theese pieces were part of a cultural strategy of survival and revitalisation of the cultural life of Rapa Nui. . Works like theese led to a widespread range of both modern art and souvenir production.

Diese Moai Figur aus natürlichem, porenreichen Vulkangestein wurde von meinen Eltern anlässlich der Eröffnung des kleinen Mataveri Flughafens auf Hangaroa im jahr 1967 erworben. Das Stück ist etwa 28 Zentimeter hoch und wiegt 1650 Gramm. Es ist eine exakte Entsprechung der großen Ahnenfiguren mit Augen aus Obsidian und Knochen sowie einem roten Hut ( pukao ). Frühere Forsch wie Thor Heyerdahl sahen in solchen Neuschöpfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wertlose Stücke. Heute werden solche Arbeiten neu bewerten und als Teil einer kulturellen Überlebens- bzw. Wiederbelebungsstrategie gesehen, die eine moderne Kunstproduktion ebenso hervorbrachte wie einfache Stücke für den Souvenirbedarf.
