Easter ISLAND MOAI, a wood carving we obtained on Easter Island in 1973, weighs 15.5 ounces, measures 3 inches wide at the base, and is 8 inches tall. The moai is in its original, pristine condition, having no stains, dents, scratches, or chips, except for a tiny chip on the left side of the nose, which was probably there when we bought the statue (see 4th photo). The moai was carved from wood circa 1972 for sale to tourists. The wood is fairly hard, and was probably imported, as there are few trees remaining on the island. The date 1973 is seen on the base of another, larger wooden moai we collected on the same trip (see photo). The photo of Easter Islanders in small boats was taken in February,1970 aboard the NOAA vessel, Oceanographer, during a stop for medical emergency. The islanders traded carvings for blue jeans and other hard to obtain items. This moai is the LAST ONE of this type/style we have for sale.
