The mysterious statues of Easter Island have baffled visitors for centuries, raising questions about "giants" and lost civilizations. Looming from the barren landscape like silent sentinels, 300 of them once created an unbroken line around the island, all carved from the black lava stone of Rano Raraku Volcano.

Reaching ten meters in height (33 feet) and weighing up to 80 tons, the majority of them were once capped with red-stained hats and back-carved with ancient initiation symbols, although weather has eroded much of these features.To the people who erected them, the statues were repositories of spirit, charged by Life-Force from the Creator which they called "mana."
