Edwardian, Beautiful, Solid Silver Basket – Sheffield 1907:

Description:

This is a beautiful, Edwardian, good quality solid silverbasket; having cast handles of wreath & ribbon design to a pierced border,a solid base and stands on a spreading circular, pierced foot with beaddecorated edge.

There is an inscription in the bottom of the basket whichreads – Marie Jennings MBE over M M C over 1985 - 2000.

I looked up Marie Jennings on the internet and I think theinscription possibly refers to Marie PatriciaJennings MBE, consumer champion and figurehead of financial services regulation,who set up the ‘Money Management Council’ (possibly referring to the M M Cengraved in the basket?) and who was appointed MBE in2000 for services to personal finance.

Condition:

The basket is in excellent condition for 109 years old withonly very light surface scratching.

Measurements:

It measures approx. 5 cm high; 15.5 cm diameter; 20.5 cmacross the handles and weighs 213.6 grams / 6.868 troy oz.

Hallmarks:

It is fully hallmarked to the underside with: The crown forthe Sheffield assay office, the lion passant for English (925) sterling silver,the date letter for 1907 and the maker’s mark for Hawksworth,Eyre & Co Ltd.
