On offer here is a fine amuletic statue of Horus of Nekhen, one of the very oldest deities in the Egyptian pantheon and the first national god. First appearing  in the late pre-dynastic period, he was directly associated with kingship and rulers would come to be known as ‘the living Horus’.

This depiction shows Horus wrapped in a shroud with his head surmounted by two tall feather plumes. This is an 18th dynasty variation of the established early form.

In addition a hand painted Horus amulet has been included to compliment the display.

Both are made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone & the statue has an aged green patina. This petite statue is mounted on a polished, felt based stand.

Background information

One of the earliest representations of a defined Egyptian deity is Horus of Nekhen. The cult center was the city of Nekhen / Hierakonpolis  which was the site of one of the oldest temples in the land.

This area of cultural awakening deals with dates of up to 5000 B.C.E during the Badarian, and subsequent Nagada I & II cultures. This is Pre-dynastic Egypt when the styles of the rapidly emerging culture took shape in sculpture, pottery, painting and politics.

If you have not visited the earliest eras of Egyptian culture in your studies it is an awesome and inspiring place to delve deeper.

Nekhen was the home of the world’s first zoo and is the find place of some of the most iconic objects from the proto dynastic period. The Narmer palette and the ceremonial mace head of the scorpion king are two of the most outstanding examples.  A lesser known fact is it is also the home of the oldest painted tomb in the country
