Married couple - double Shabti figures resting on a couch

Dimensions - Height - 8.5 cm - 3-1/4 inches

Base length - 13 cm - 5 inches

Base width - 6cm - 2 -1/4 inches

This unusual ushabti format features two figures - a married couple, resting for eternity on a ceremonial couch. This is a reproduction of an actual ancient artifact that would have been placed in the tomb as a standby in case something happened to the mummies of the people depicted. It is a variation of the ushabti type that was made during the mid 18th dynasty.

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone it has been aged in an aged green patina. Mounted on a polished felt based stand it is a curiosity among ushabti statues and well worth incorperating into a collection of the standing varieties.

Details - The male figure has the shorter wig and is being massaged on his heart by a \'Ba\' bird which has a human head with a birds body. A ba was known as a soul bird and represented the departed personality. Once an individual was buried the soul bird was said to fly out of the tomb by day to watch over the world it left behind and return by night.

The goddess Isis and Nepthys are represented at either ends of the bed in the form of a standing figure and a small crouching relief of Isis holding a \'Shen\' symbol. This design was an elaborate form that made an appearance during the 18th dynasty and although this example is somewhat crude, it still has a charm in its proportions and style. It would have been a luxury item and most probably dates to the reign of Amenhotep III.
