Background information - Some doubt exists with the authenticity of the original piece that was purchased by the Louvre in 1923 as it is an exceptional and unique piece. The style of wig for example is unprecedented for a young king but it does have a hint of an unfinished Nubian style wig that was very popular during this period.

Theportraithas been a treasuredfeature of the Amarna section of the gallery for 80 years andIn any case it is a great piece of sculpture that captures the imagination of the Amarna period at a time when the soon to be boy king was already being groomed for kingship. The Amarna period ushered in the greatest artistic revolution in Egypt's long historyso it was not surprising that early curators could attribute this ethereal piece to this era.

Tutankhamun shows a sunken hollow encirclinghis head which would have been intended asa golden inlay headband. Two small holes on his foreheadwould recieve the royal uraeus cobra. The eyes would have been inlaid as well in coloured glass or stone. Calcite for the whites of the eyes and polished obsidian for the pupil was acommon choice for this statue type.

Even without the eyes and golden inlays the piece maintains a striking presence and displays well with good overhead lighting. The polished felt based stand also adds a dignified touch to a confident image of the boy king.

Extraessential info - His original name was Tutankhaten when he was a young princeraised in the court of Akhenaten at Amarna which included the name of the ephemeral state god 'Aten' in his title.

This would be replaced with the name Amun who was the enduring national god of the New Kingdom.
