EleanorFortescue-Brickdale (1871-1945) is a very well known and belovedEnglish artist who studied at the Crystal Palace Art School and hassale records in the low five figures. Here is an opportunityto pick up one of her original pieces (perhaps a study for a laterwork?) for a fraction of that cost. The piece is well-protectedunder glass, and is in overall good condition. Fortescue-Brickdalewas born at her parents\' house, Birchamp Villa[1]in UpperNorwood, Surrey as Mary Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale the daughterof Matthew and Sarah Fortescue Brickdale, her father was a barrister.She was trained first at the CrystalPalace School of Art, under Herbert Bone and entered the RoyalAcademy in 1896. Her first major painting was The Pale Complexionof True Love (1899). She soon began exhibiting her oil paintingsat the Royal Academy, and her watercolours at the Dowdeswell Gallery,where she had several solo exhibitions.[2]

While at the academy, she cameunder the influence of JohnByam Liston Shaw, a protégé of JohnEverett Millais much influenced by JohnWilliam Waterhouse.[2]When Byam Shaw founded anart school in 1911, Fortescue-Brickdale became a teacher there.

In 1909, Ernest Brown, of theLeicesterGalleries, commissioned a series of 28 watercolour illustrationsto Tennyson\'sIdyllsof the King, which she painted over two years. They wereexhibited in the gallery in 1911, and 24 of them were published thenext year in a deluxe edition of the first four Idylls [2]

She lived during much of hercareer in Holland Park Road, opposite LeightonHouse, where she held an exhibition in 1904.[2]

Later, she also worked with stainedglass. She was a staunch Christian, and donated works tochurches. Amongst her best known works are The Uninvited Guestand Guinevere.
