Solid Silver Imperial Russian Centerpiece
A beautiful solid silver centerpiece. From the silver marks, stamped Malcz, it was made by Karol Filip Malcz, a master silversmith who was active in Warsaw between 1827 - 1864. The piece has the mark of the Russian Imperial assay office of Warsaw, then part of the Russian Empire, the Imperial double headed eagle. And it is marked with 84, indicating 84 zolotniki, or 875/1000 silver.
It is a substantial piece, weighing 23 1/4 ounces of silver. It measures 16 1/2 inches at the handles, or 12 inches at this length. It is 10 inches wide and 4 1/4 inches high. The centerpiece has graceful handles joined to the body with floral designs. They also have graceful curves and a fleur de lis in the center of the handles. The body of the centerpiece is decorated with raised scalloped concentric ridges at both ends of the centerpiece and its middle. There is a complex play of the simplicity of the center and the restrained grace of the handles.
Given the dates of Malcz\'s activity and the assay marks, the piece was made between 1852- 1864. It has survived revolutions and 2 world wars. It is a true antique. Give its age, it show little surface wear. There is a shallow nick near one of the handles, but it is not obvious, as the eye is drawn to the more exuberanthandles. Please see the photographs to see the beauty of this piece. It would grace any home and table.
