Emile Galle (1846-1904): A Glass artist who was born in Nancy, France, the home to many of the finest glass studios in the world. He is credited with being the pioneer of cameo glass, the process taking opaque glass and fusing other colored pieces of carved glass often in the shape of flowers. After his exhibit at the Paris Exhibition in 1878 the demand for and recognition of his art exploded. He went on to found the Art Nouveau movement known as the Ecole de Nancy. This theory of art still has an influence in French art today and is well respected by critics worldwide.
