FINEST ENGLISH CHARLES II STERLING SILVER FLAT TOP TANKARD; BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED FAMILY COAT OF ARMS
We are pleased to offer this fine Charles II flat top tankard. Displaying beautifully engraved family coat of arms. Raised dragon atop unique pear shape shield, a small section with textured ground, rest smooth. Within lush foliate frame. The shoulder with maker AF stamped four times, rubbed but discernible. Under the lid along edge three more marks, these mostly rubbed. This maker is not listed in either Jackson or Grimwade. A near identical Charles II flat top step out foot tankard is illustrated in Waldron page 199. He notes c1705 dating. In as noted gently tapering stright side construction. Flat top gently domed edge cover. Classic foliate volute thumb piece. First observed on Charles II tankards such as this. Thick well cast tapering S-scroll handle. Applied twin vine and leaf strapwork. The tankard is 8 1/2 inches handle to edge and 6 1/2 tall. Thick heavy guage construction weighs 24 1/2 (standard) ounces. Rich lusterous sterling patina. The beautifully engraved family coat arms retains most all of its original detail. Interior with what appears to be original gold wash in fine state. Please note there are numerous old silver restorations to cover, handle body and seam of solder under base. Please offer with that in mind.
