This stunning and veryspecial rack is unlike any I have seen in my collectingofover 25 years. Although, of classic design and proportions the rack bears a unique pattern of graduated and slopinginternal loops within the exterior framework of hoops and base. The result is a wonderfully stylish, and pleasing visual presentation.

Standing 6 inches tall, 6 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide. made from heavy gauge silver weighing a significant 389 grams (13.7oz) Of clean and simple lines, the rack sits atop a rectangular and pinched tapered frame, withfour shell capped feet. There areno signs of wear or breaks in any of the bars or connection to the base, asisso common in sterling toast racks.

Clearly punched with the lion passant for assayed english sterling, the leopards head for London, the date letter code of agothic \"C\" for 1858, and the regents head for Queen Victoria. The makers mark bears the letters \"ISH\" under a crown.

The history of this very important firm is far too great to post here, but briefly, Hunt & Roskell was the continuation of the well known firm of Storr & Mortimer, the business formed by Paul Storr and John Mortimer in 1822 after Paul Storr had severed his connection with Rundell, Bridge & Rundell. In 1826, Storr & Mortimer were joined in partnership by Paul Storr\'s nephew, John Samuel Hunt, who had worked for Storr for many years as a Chaser. Following Paul Storr\'s retirement in December 1838, the business was restyled Mortimer & Hunt, the partners being recorded as John Mortimer, John Samuel Hunt, and his son, John Hunt.John Mortimer retired in December 1843, and John Samuel Hunt and John Hunt entered into partnership with Robert Roskell and Charles Frederick Hancock, and the business name changed to Hunt & Roskell. In January 1849, Charles Frederick Hancock left the partnership to start his own business.Hunt & Roskell was later sold to J.W. Benson in 1899, and after WWII it became part of Mappin & Webb, who in turn were acquired by Asprey & Co. in 1990
