Francis Josef I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary was the last important ruler of the Habsburg dynasty; his policies played a major role in the events that led to World War I
The double-headed eagle was an old Byzantine Empire symbol. The bird looks both East and West, symbolizing an empire that rules over both the East (Asia) and West (Europe). The symbol was annexed by Ottoman conquerors of the Byzantines, and was also used by the Holy Roman Empire and several other European monarchies (most notably Russia) to symbolize their goal of a world-spanning empire, and to stake a claim as being the one true successors to the ancient Roman empire. It has either the Hapsburg coat of arms on the eagles breast, or the Austrian Federal Shield. Excellent pre WWI coin and collectible.

Between the World Wars the Weimar Republic of Germany issued several pfennig coins that are sought by collectors today. They are made from aluminum-bronze, and have the \'DEUTSCHES REICH\' on the obverse, with six stalks of grain forming a triangle above the date on the reverse.

The obverse of this coin depicts a phoenix, a bird first described in Egyptian mythology that lived in the desert for 500 years and then consumed itself by fire, later to rise renewed from its ashes. The obverse inscription translates into \"Greek Democracy.\"
The reverse depicts an owl from the ancient Classical Owl. The owl was the symbol of goddess Athena and it was first depicted on an ancient Greek tetradrachm (5th century b.C.).
