Up for sale is anExceedingly Scarce, Fine Authentic Opalotype Glass Abraham Lincoln Original Photograph circa 1860\'s. The basic opalotype technique, involving wet collodion and silver gelatin, was patented in 1857 by Glover and Bold ofLiverpool. Opalotypes exploited two basic techniques, using either the transfer of a carbon print onto glass, or the exposure of light-sensitive emulsion on the glass surface to the negative. Opalotype photography, never common, was practiced in various forms until it waned and disappeared in the 1930s.

Opalotype is one of a number of early photographic techniques now generally consigned to historical status, ivorytype,kallitype,orotone, andtintype. This and many other historical photographic methods are now consideredalternative photographic techniquesand are practised by a small number of dedicated artists.

This opalotype features a profile view of Lincoln in between two pieces of glass to make for a frame. The size is 8 1/2\" x 6 5/8\" total of the piece in the frame with the oval image measuring a site size of 4 3/8\" x 3 1/2\". The photograph is in excellent condition with no defects noted while the frame has wear to the border, damage to the back glass, and a tape repair to back glass as shown in the photos. This is a fine example of tremendous value due to scarcity and photographic technique which is worthy of a museum and/or the most discerning of private collectors. Probably one of only a handful of known Lincoln Opalotype\'s to have survived and be in existence to this day.
