Fine and extremely rare old pawn Ke-Wa Santo Domingo Pueblo Indian handmade turquoise heishi necklace, with spiny oyster shell tabs and sponge coral tubular beads. Every single bead on this necklace was handmade and/or rolled. Wonderful design that harkens back to pieces Native Americans made for themselves. Measures 32 1/2 inches long; 3/4 inches wide at the tabs. Weight is a sturdy 72.5 grams. The beads of the majority of heishi necklaces seen today have been imported from China.
Has original tag with the maker\'s name, Crucita Tenorio, and old price on it. Crucita Tenorio is apparently now 100; no telling how long ago this was made, but judging by the old price, quite a long time ago. I consulted the Native American jewelry expert in a forum to verify that the beads were made by hand, and was told this, “She would have cut the pieces into small squares and drilled a hole in the center. Then the turquoise is strung on a wire and she uses a grinder. We don’t see many turquoise necklaces like this.” Superb necklace in excellent condition. A rarity and an investment piece.
