CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA CONGRESSMAN FROM ALABAMAIN 1863

U.S. DEMOCRATICCONGRESSMAN FROM ALABAMA 1847-1861

Cobb was a strongUnionist and opponent of Secession, and when Alabama seceded in 1861, hewithdrew from Congress only reluctantly. He was elected to the SecondConfederate Congress in 1863 amid growing antiwar sentiment. He however did notarrive to take his seat, and was subsequently expelled by a unanimous vote forhis avowed Unionist sentiments. Cobb was killed by the accidental discharge ofhis own pistol while putting up a fence on his plantation near Bellefonte onNovember 1, 1864.
