This was a really nice find! It is a Wasamba circumcision rattle made by the Bambara people, these lovely items are quite hard to find as they are easily broken and just get thrown away rather than repaired. This a very old example from an ex French collection to which it fell into my own Dogon collection a few years ago now, which is far too large now and I need to down size it a bit. It comes with its own custom made stainless steel stand which I had made as part of the sale.

These rattles come in a range of sizes from tribe to tribe. The rattling elements are fragments of gourd rattle (sistrum gourd).
Sistrums generally consist of discs (gourds washers, metal ...) rattling, strung on a rod and by shaking collide, making a dry, noisy similar to rattle.
The sitar is known since ancient times. It survives today in the Coptic rites and West Africa in various populations: Bambara (Bamana), Bozo, Senufo, Dogon etc ....

The sistrum of West African calabash \"Wasamba\" Bambara (Bamana), \"WASAMAK
A\" of the Senufo (Senufo) or \"WANDYERMA\" Dogon .... differs from other metal castanets that are general. It consists of a forked branch into inverted V-shape, of which the longest and the largest serves as a handle; in the thinnest part are threaded gourd washers mounted in pairs whose concave sides are placed one against the other. The fork is often topped with a sculpted head of Bambara style.

The first study of a sitar Wasamba or calabash, is indebted to the Dakar-Djibouti mission during his stay among the peoples of the former French Sudan. Wasamba first entered the Trocadero Museum of Ethnography Museum became The Man in 1885 and currently Quai Branly Museum; it was collected by Dr. Bellamy in Bamako.
In West Africa the sitar is reserved to the accompaniment of initiation rituals such as circumcision or during the ceremony itself, or during the period of convalescence and retirement. Today the sistrum is also played in some funerals in Côte d\'Ivoire for example, or as support for dance; rhythm instrument, it can be integrated into percussion ensembles (drums, rattles etc ...).
