19th Century Russian Icon of the Flagellation of Christ

Date: 2nd half of the 19th Century

Features

Extremely rare subject with, as far as I have found, none sold in North America & only one or two ever sold in Europe.

Sometimes found on extended feast icons as one of the minature scenes based on the life of Christ.

Tempera over gesso with gilded halo over Christ & to the border.

Thick pallette used for all the flesh tones so the body of Christ & the guards faces & arms stand out in bold relief.

The border painting in enamel styling frames the scene perfectly & with the background architecture kept to a minimum the focus is primarily on the subject in hand, namely the beating of Christ.

Size 12 inch x 10 ½ inch x 7/8ths inch (31cm x 26.5cm x 2cm)

Condition –Mostly original except some older restoration to the tunic of the right guard

The event is mentioned in three of the four canonical Gospels, and was the usual prelude to crucifixion under Roman law. In the Passion of Christ it precedes the Mocking of Christ and the Crowning with thorns.

It first appears in art in the West in the 9th century. It is almost never found in Byzantine art, and remains very rare in Eastern Orthodox art at any date. Initially found in illuminated manuscripts and small ivories, there are surviving monumental wall-paintings from around 1000 in Italy. From the start there are most often three figures, Christ and two servants of Pontius Pilate who whip him. In early depictions Christ may be naked, or wearing a long robe, facing out or seen from behind; from the 12th century it is standard that Christ wears a loincloth (perizoma) and faces out towards the viewer.

Shipping cost is from the UK to USA / Canada. Price for European & other destinations maybe different.
