AN ANTIQUE ANDEAN INDIAN WOOD DANCE MASK

.

Inventory Number: TM8089
Origin: Cantón Palka (Palca), Ayopaya Province, Department of Cochabamba, Bolivia, South America.
Basic Description: An authentic indigenous Native American hand-carved wooden ceremonial mask of antique age. The mask was worn in Kacharpaya dances at the end of carnaval. It is a somewhat lightweight mask of hard wood, darkened front and back. Similar stucco and tin masks are known from the altiplano of Oruro and La Paz; those also appear during Carnaval but during different dances. This is the only wooden example of the kind that we are familiar with. Our middle-age sources reported that the mask was used \"in the times of our grandfathers.\"
Approximate Age: Antique, 20th century. Please refer to the AKATAKSA \"DATING\" TERMS.
Materials: Andean hardwood.
Approximate Size: 7 inches high by 6 3/8 inches wide by 2 1/8 inches deep.
Condition: EXCELLENT. There are remains of old, water-based glue on the inside back of the mask possibly for the attachment of a \"wig\" or cloth lining to protect the wearers\' face. Please refer to the photos.
