ROYAL MOVEABLE PUNCH AND JUDY BOOKDean and CoCirca 1870s
This is one of the earliest moveable books, published by Dean and Co of Fleet Street, London, who were pioneers of the genre. This Punch and Judy is highly collectable - as far as I can find out there are only a dozen or so lodged in institutions across the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and only one or two others for sale anywhere, in different states of repair !The book comprises eight full colour moveable lithographed pictures telling the Punch and Judy story through poems set underneath a stage setting which includes the various characters manipulated by tabs.. all of the tabs in this edition are present and working !The scenes, as shown in the photographs are ; Punch and Judy, Punch, Judy and Baby (though Baby is missing, as far as I can see the only majoromission or defect of this book!),Punch and the Beadle,Punch and the Clown, Punch and Shallaballa, Punch and the Ghost of Judy, Punch and Dog Toby and Punch returns Thanks. All the colours are bright and clean. There are some tears to the flimsy backing pages and the backing page to the first and thirdscenesare missing. All the tabs are working and as far as I can tell are the originalsand all characters moveable. As I say, the Baby figure from scene II has been lost but I don\'t believe this was a moving figure, just a baby in Judy\'s arms. The cover has light soiling commensurate with age and the back cover (an advertisement for Goodall\'s Household Specialities of Leeds) is scuffed away in two places at the back.A rare curiosity for the book and collectabilia connoisseur - or an inspired Xmas gift! Please feel free to contact me with any queries
