Men\'s kimono are rarely offered in the UK and never at this price. This haori is a particularly wonderful design. It has a fabulous woven, pictorial lining. Woven silk linings are the most highly prized on these sorts of jackets and are the most expensive.
Some people hang these up, inside out to use the lining as a unique type of artwork/ wall art. Of course the jacket can be worn in the normal way and some people choose to wear them inside-out to show the lining.
This is a superb example of a vintage, hand-sewn, formal, black, weighty, silk men\'s haori (jacket) kimono. The outer fabric is all plain black, smooth, glossy, soft, lustrous, habutae silk.
The lining is highly lustrous, glossy, rich, silvery brown-grey in the non-patterned part.
The design part of the lining is all woven. There are 2 main motifs.
There are two square frames which represent shikishi. This is a traditional card used for artwork, poetry and calligraphy. The two shikishi have a background of \'mink\' colour. The front frame shows a woven coastal scene with small ships. There are mountains in the background and pine branches in the foreground. Below this is another rectangular frame showing but you can only see a part of it. The picture on it is limestone cliffs with pine trees. To the left of the lining is depicted some more pine branches from a cloud-pruned pine tree. This is a traditional way of pruning trees in Japanese gardens.
Pine is a popular and ancient decorative motif in Japan and represents longevity and resilience.
The threads of the design are highly lustrous and glossy and give a lovely rich effect. The colours are all masculine being variations of browns, and blue-greens

This haori also includes himo tying cords, which is unusual because they are usually sold separately and they cost minimum £10 up to £30 on their own. These ones are plaited, flat cords in a dark blue silk which picks up the colours in the lining. The himo cords are pre-tied and just hook on, with little metal hooks, to little loops inside the lapels.
This jacket would make a superb and unique jacket or display item.
This kimono has the usual arrangement of 5 mon crests- 3 across the back - one central and one on each sleeve and two on the front chest. The mon crest is unusual being a simple cross symbol, encircled\'. Mon crests denote formality in Japanese clothing. They stem from ancient family crests which were used during the time of the Samurai.
Haori are short kimono jackets worn over full length kimonos and sometimes hakama. The sleeves are worn shorter than other kimonos. They are not designed to close in front but are worn open. They can have two tying cords called Himo that are knotted across the chest which are included with this particular jacket.
AGE: The kimono is completely hand-stitched, it probably dates from the late Showa period (1926-1989). It is difficult to date some kimono accurately as they have been made the same way for decades.
CONDITION: The kimono is in excellent vintage condition which means it has no significant faults to note. This is a garment in fabulous overall condition, but it is vintage so please do not expect it to look exactly like new.
SIZE: I think it would fit most average sized men but not very large men. The size is fairly typical for this kind of garment but a little longer than some.
Sleeve edge to sleeve edge width is 132cm/52”, overall length is 103cm/40.5\", the width across the back (side seam to side seam) is a at 61cm/24”. The weight is fairly heavy at 800g. The weight is reflected in the postal costs.
