Artisans use their experience and simple tools (wooden blocks and molds) to create exquisite crystal masterpieces.
The techniques and tools have hardly changed over the centuries.At first, the special crystal mix is transformed into molten crystal in huge furnaces heated to about 1200° C.
The glass blowers work around the furnace which contains molten crystal. The glass craftsman dips the end of metal tube into the core of the furnace to scoop the needed amount of molten crystal glob.
While rotating the tube, the artist shapes the crystal into a desired form by blowing the air into the other end of metal tube.
This requires tremendous efforts and co-ordination of hands, breath and strength.Cased crystal is created by using an innovative technique of fusing together two layers of clear and colored crystal. Mouth blown crystal shape is created using the metal mold, and another layer is blown into it immediately after. Afterwards, the mold is taken from the piece, and the piece needs to be heated once more for the layers to fuse together. The colored outer layer is usually thicker than the inner layers.
Finally, the craftsman etches a pattern, or cuts away at the outer layer of glass in order produce a specific design, by revealing the inner crystal layer.
