Widely associated with the Republican Party beginning with the Lincoln campaign of 1860, the \"Wide Awake\" torches or lanterns were intended to present Republican nominee Abraham Lincoln as a light \"that will shine throughout the Union.\" When the Republican Party was first being formed and Lincoln\'s supporters began organizing, one of the major campaign groups was called the Wide Awake Club.
Ornate lanterns were issued to the paramilitary group of colonels, majors, captains and others for his protection and order during the campaign. More utilitarian plain torches were issued to the masses.
Torch light processions organized by Republican \"Wide Awake\" clubs in cities throughout the North provided the most picturesque feature of the spirited campaign of 1860. In Chicago on October 3, 1860, 10,000 Wide Awakes marched in a three-mile procession. Such torches were used in political campaigns until late in the century
