Description:

A highly impressive and decorative antique19th Centurybronze replica of The Warwick Vase, manufactured and signed to the edge of the foot rim for the renownedFrenchfoundry of Ferdinand Barbedienne.

The well cast vase stands on atall deep greenmarble plinth. The fluted spreading foot, with gadrooned collar above, supportsthe wide urn form vase. It is adorned with eight male Bacchanalian masks,flanked by naturalistic intertwined handles. The upper dish, which is removable,is surrounded by a beaded border and gadrooned trim.

Background:

Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) was a French metalworkerandmanufacturer, best known as a bronze founder. In 1838 he went into partnershipwith Achille Collas(1795-1859), who had invented a machine to createminiature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business sellingminiatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe.Between 1850 and 1854 his firm provided furnishings inthe Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They receivednumerous medals at International Exhibitions, including medals in threedifferent classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.

The original Warwick Vaseis anancient RomanmarblevasewithBacchicornament that was discovered at the villa of the Roman Emperor, Hadrian, in Tivoli in 1771 byGavin Hamilton, aScottishantiquarian art dealerinRome, and is now in theBurrell Collection nearGlasgowinScotland.

Condition:

In very good antique condition, the bronze without damage or restoration, and a pleasing caramel patina. The original marble base has some expected damage to the corners.Please see the images provided which complement this description.
