Thissolid pewter tankard dates to the Victorian era and is of “QUART” capacity which is marked to

the lefthand side of thehandle.

The maker is SANDERS & SONS,LONDON whose mark is struck inside the base.

There are two verificationmarks to the right hand side of the handle, one being a crowned VR over 21above LCC

and the other a crowned GR over 31

(London and Middlesex Countyrespectively - see Marks and Marking of Weights and Measures of the BritishIsles

– Ricketts & Douglas).

There isan attractive inscription to the front of the body which reads:

H. Rack

Ye Fox

Coulsdon Common

The Foxbeen serving the local community of Coulsdon Common in Surrey since c1720

and stillcontinues to provide hospitality to this day.

Thereare a couple of knocks to the footrim (not noticeable when displayed) butotherwise

the mug is in very good condition with minor wear commensurate withage (see images),

but no splits, holes or repairs, and would make a greatdisplay piece.
