FINE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN PEWTER QUARTTANKARD MUG
MEASURE BY WARNE – SWAN, HORLEY, C19TH
This mugis dates to the C19TH and has the capacity of “QUART” which is marked to the
right handside of the handle.
There is a verification mark of “SURREY” in acircle around the letter “A”
(Surrey County - see Marks and Marking of Weightsand Measures of the British Isles – Ricketts & Douglas)
to the left handside of the handle.
Themaker is “JOHN WARNE” of BLACKFRIARS ROAD, London whose mark isstruck inside the base.
There is an attractive inscription in awrigglework cartouche to the body which reads:
C. Burstow
Swan
Horley Station
and theletter \"B\" to the top of the handle.
Charles Burstow was the licensee of The White Swan whenit first opened in 1861 until 1882.
Sadly the pub closed in 1978 and was demolishedsoon after.
The pub was, not surprisingly, very close to Horley railway station in Surrey.
The mugis in excellent condition with minor wear commensurate with age (see images),
but no holes, splits or repairs, and would make a great display piece.
