IMPORTANT & HISTORICAL SPANISHCOLONIALSTYLE CHAPS

ANTIQUE ~ MINTY ~ FILIGREED ~ BUCKSTITCHED ~ LINED

WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE PERFORMER WEARING THESE CHAPS

This is a fabulous, eye-appealing, high quality, hand crafted pair of early Chinaco style chaps from the Spanish Colonial period; with hundreds of hand filigreed cut out decorations, and thousands of hand stitched buckstitched decoration. They were custom made to order in Spain or Mexico probably in the 1920\'s; and must have taken weeks by a skilled artisan to create this fancy, eye-popping leather Masterpiece. This unbelievable style of hand craftsmanship is a lost art.

The Spanish and Mexican cultures are very traditional, and Makers would revive period styles in clothing, spurs, et al. Many styles stayed in fashion for a century or more; and were then reintroduced. These articles were very popular & stylish; both during their original period, as well as in the later re-introduction revival period. This pair of chaps is from the \"Charro Revival\" period of the 1920\'s through the 1930\'s. In the U.S. border states, especially Texas, there were annual Charro Days where residents of the border towns such as Brownsville, Texas, had a \"Grande\" parade, and many residents, both Hispanic and \"Gringo\", wore Charro outfits during the 2 week celebration period. This particular style is a throwback to the Spanish Colonial period before 1821; but also was popular during the later Republica Mexicana period well into the 1800\'s.

These unmarked chaps are made from a select tan colored hide that has a suede finish, with a thin glove leather lining inside in a beautiful natural aged tan coloration. The front suede and back glove leather pieces are held together by the thousands of buckstitched decorations done by hand. The leather adornments are made from beautiful tan collored pigskin, painstakinglyhand filigreed with a white leather background for contrast. These chaps, when laid flat, are about 42\" across both the top and bottom. There is a fancy scalloped edge across the top, with center hole decorations. The measurement down the middle, from top to bottom, is about 40\". The multi-strand woven belts are flat woven from 6 strands of leather, and about 36\" long. One strand feeds through the eyelet in the right side of the top to act as the belt holding the pair on the waist. Each end has 3 leather tassels with hand stitched green and white thread connectors, and each of the strands of the tassels have a thread through them; showing attention to detail. Themultiplestrands of the 2 tan leather tassels at the top right and left are about 8\" long. Themultiplestrands of 2 tan leather tassels on the sides at the center edges are about 18\" long. The top center filigreed piece has 1 1/2\" long rows of tassels at the bottom. The bottom center piece has 2 tan leather tassels are about 14\" long, with a reinforced edge at the crotch, along with 4 leather straps with a rolled leather barrel knot. These straps, 2 on each side of the front, are inserted to the 2 eyelets on the ends of the 6 1/2\" long triangular shaped tabs at the middle outside edge of each leg; thus, securing each side around the leg. The images with a white background were taken indoors with a flash; the images with a red background were taken outdoors in the shade. The backside has an original inked notation, \"800\" on the top right of the backside. This is not an inventory # or serial #, as these were custom made to order. It is probable that this was the orignal price in the 1920\'s; i.e., 800 pesos. At the time, it would have been equivalent to about $65 USD, a HUGE sum of money; and could only be afforded by a very wealthy gentleman of means such as an International performer. Theperformershown in the image was a famous dancer during the 20\'s & 30\'s. I used to have some handbills with his name and tour dates showing that he performed Internationally; but I can\'t find the provenance; just the small, original 3 1/4\" x 2 1/4\" original photograph that is included. I feel confident someone will recognize him and let me know; and that his history as a performer would then be easily researched.

This is the best pair of this style chaps I have ever seen; both in quality and in condition; and thecraftsmanshipis extraordinary. There is no damage, repairs or alterations; just some light sweat staining, and can be expected, on the inside leather lining. This piece can fill an entire wall with Folk Art decoration, and would be a handsome addition to any Spanish Colonial, Republica Mexicana, Old West, Western Americana, Chinaco, Vaquero, Charro, Cowboy, Charrita, Cowgirl collection or display. Provenance: I purchased this piece years ago from a family member, and has been in my personal collection ever since. What do you think a current artist` would charge today to recreate a pair like this?
