A fine rare genuine old Northwest Coast Haida argillite hand carved figural pipe dating from the mid to late 1800\'s. The pipe is finely carved with great detail and fine forms and depicts a Raven with a frog on his back. The inspiration for this type of carving came to the Haida from the introduction of the clay trade pipe brought in by European traders. The Haida quickly adapted their own iconography to the form and incorporated animal and traditional crest imagery. Examples of Haida argillite trade pipes are well documented in the literature , please see the publication Magic Leaves by Peter McNair Alan Hoover (pages 72-78 and 119-126). The raised mouth piece and channeled bottom are really nice and unusual touches to this fine example.Made by a master carver thepipe measures 6 1/2\" long x 2\" high and is in excellent condition for its age, with no damages or repairs noted, some natural thin stable lines in the stone are present which is normal characteristic of argillite itself. This museum qualitypipe is fully guaranteed to be 100 % real argillite, hand carved and old .Argillite is the slate black rock that is only found in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia and all known reserves are the sole and closely guarded property of the Haida tribe.
