A special rare and very early fine large old genuine hand carved Northwest Coast Haida Indian hollow back argillite totem pole circa 1880. The totem features great well carved imagery and features Bear with a raven emerging from its chest and a noble seated bear at the base.The earliest argillite model totem poles very much resembled the carving of the large village monumental totems that stood in front of the houses. These poles carried a dimensional style that used a general proportion of a head to body ratio of 1:1 , later this became more of a 1:2 ratio at the end of the 1800\'s and carries on to this day. The earliest totems also tended to have deep hollowed out back portions that was also a common feature of the monumental poles. This totem has all the features of a very early sculpture. The totem stands a very respectable 11 1/4\" tall with a base measuring 3 1/3\" x 2 1/2\' and is in excellent condition for its age. Inscribed on the bottom is a somewhat curios inscription that reads \"Alaska Skagway\" , which means it must of retailed in one of the first curio shops from the region as an already old carving. A great early large rare example that will make an excellent display item and a fine addition to anyone\'s collection. Argillite is the slate black rock that is only found in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia and all known reserves are the sole and closely guarded property of the Haida tribe.
