FINE LARGE OLD NORTHWEST COAST KWAKIUTL INDIAN CEDAR TOTEM POLE Circa 1900:

A fine large rare early Northwest Coast northern Kwakiutl hand carved and painted yellow cedar totem circa 1900-1920. The totem most likely originates from the remote Quatsino sound area and features wonderful deep well carved sculptural imagery featuring a Thunderbird, diving whale ( a face is carved in the blow hole) and a smiling shaman at the base. Note the deep hollowed out back seen mostly in very early totems and the fineness and overall execution of the carved details. The totem is painted in great old pigments of blue and black. The totem stands an impressive 21 1/4\" tall with a wingspan of 10 1/2\" wide. I believe the wings and base are replacements (both in blend in reasonably well) , as it was not unusual to loose the wings if they got removed from the slots. Also the bottom figure has some chipping noted to its lower lip, even still this rare example is both bold and impressively carved .
