A very fine very rare old Northwest Coast Nuu-chah-nulth , Nootka Makah basketry covered Tobacco tin covered basket dating from the very early 1900\'s. Very finely woven ( with an amazing stitch count of approx 25 stitches per inch) from split cedar bark and naturally dyed bear grasses to produce the pictorial elements that surround the periphery, a large red butterfly and a canoe Just an amazing accomplishment for the weaver to weave so tightly and evenly around the surface of the tin ! The natural dyes have faded slightly as expected over the years. The tin stands 5\" tall x 5\" D and is in good condition with some stains and patina from great age and handling, no damages or repairs.This museum quality basket displays beautifully and is worthy of the finest collections, I recall only ever seeing other of this form over the many years of collecting and visiting museum collections .Please add $9.95 for careful shipping and insurance (USA), we\'ll be happy to combine shipping if feasible.
