FINE OLD NORTHWEST COAST NOOTKA NUU-CHAH-NULTH TLINGIT INDIAN CEDAR TOTEM C1930:

A fine old Northwest Coast Nuu-chah-nulth or possibly Tlingit hand carved and painted cedar totem pole dating from the 1930\'s-40\'s. The totem was most likely carved by an early member of the famous Williams family of totem pole carvers. The totem depicts a Thunderbird with a sisuitl ( sea serpent design) on its wings, seated human and a diving frog at the bottom. The totem is painted in great original old and striking pigments of yellow, green, blue, red and black. The totem stands 12 1/2\" tall with a 8 1/4\" wingspan, on a square base measuring 3\" x 3\" , marked \"Ketchikan\" to the reverse. The totem was most likely sold at a a curio shop in Alaska but made by a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe, it was well known that the curio shops in Vancouver and Seattle would ship and exchange inventory to Alaska for sale with other curio shops. The totem is in very good condition for its age with normal patina from age and careful handling. The totem makes an impressive display itemand a fine addition to anyone\'s collection.
