FINE OLD NORTHWEST COAST TSIMSHIAN CEDAR TOTEM c1930 ELI TAIT (1872-1949):
$132.50

A fineold Northwest Coast Tsimshian Indian hand carved and painted totem pole circa 1920*30\'s. The totem is the work of the famous carver Eli Tait ( 1872-1949) from the Tsimshian village of New Metlakatla Alaska. The totem is a model of the famous Chief Kian pole and depicts great well carved imagery featuring a Crane , Thunderbird and a seated bear at the base all family crests of the Kian family. Beautifully carved and painted in great old and original pigments of red, light blue, white and brown. The color palette on this totem is unusual for Eli and it is possible one of Eli\'s children may have painted the pole, though it was definetly carved by him or perhaps he was experimenting that day? Regardless it displays very well and is an impressive carving. Please see examples by the same hand that are attributed and illustrated in Carvings and Commerce Model totem poles 1880-2010 by Hall and Glascock on page 96-98. In The photo that shows Eli carving and at his bench with a group of totems you can make out one that bears the same imagery on the bottom shelf beside his right hand. The totem stands 7 1/2\" tall with a 2 2/3 \" wingspan and a base measuring 2 1/2\" D. The totem is in fine condition with a nice aged patina, some minimal paint wear all consistent with great age and careful handling. On the back of the totem we can see the shadow of where a label once rested , now lost. On the bottom I believe the owner remembered the name on the missing label wrote on the bottom of the base and misspelled Tait as \"Tate\" . I\'m fully confident of the attribution as the totem carries all of Eli\'s traits and painted details. One of the nicest Eli Tait poles that we\'ve had the pleasure to own and I\'m very fond of his color palette choice on this particular totem. This museum qualitytotem makes a impressive display item and a fine addition to anyone\'s collection. Please add $8.95 for careful shipping and insurance (USA & Canada). , so have fun offerding! Good Luck and Happy offerding. We\'ll be happy to combine shipping if feasible. Please check out other current offerings including a great Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian and Kwakiutl totem poles, many historic baskets de-accessioned from museum collections including Salish, Haida , Tsimshian ,Cowlitz and Tlingit examples.
