FINE RARE LARGE OLD NORTHWEST COAST HAIDA INDIAN CEDAR HOLLOW BACK TOTEM c1890:

A special fine rare large early Northwest Coast Haida Indian hand carved cedar totem circa 1890-1900. This well carved and painted totem pole features great well carved expressive imagery featuring a strong man tearing apart a wolf , and a bear holding a salmon. Painted in subtle pigments of green,black and red that have mellowed over time. The totem stands a very respectable 21\" tall x 4 1/2\" x 4 1/4\" with a concave back and is in very good condition for its age with a nice patina from great age and handling, the pigments have mellowed over time to soft hues. The concave or hollowed out back was rarely seen on totems past the early 1900\'s. These large early poles are very hard to come by these days.
