FINE RARE OLD NORTHWEST COAST KWAKIUTL SALISH INDIAN CEDAR TOTEM c1940:

A fine old Northwest Coast Kwakiutl Squamish Indian hand carved yellow cedar totem pole dating from the mid 1900\'s. The totem was carved by a great old Squamish Indian carver by the name of Alex Julian who was active from the 1930-1960\'s period. The totem depicts a Thunderbird with a crest painted on its chest and a crawling bear at the base and is painted in great old and original pigments of red, green, black and yellow. The totem stands 7\" tall with a 6\" wingspan , signed in pencil to the wing \" Alex Julian Squamish Indian Carver \" and is in excellent original condition. The Squamish tribe is directly across from the Kwakiutl tribe of Alert Bay on British Columbia\'s south western shore, being in such close proximity the tribes frequently shared art and cultural customs .
