A fine rare old Northwest CoastTlingit figural Halibut hook dating from the late 1800\'s. Classically carvedfrom alder and yellow cedar wood lashed together with spruce root wrap. The image depicts a mountain goat.TraditionalTlingit halibut hooks consist of two pieces of wood, usually alder and cedar,lashed together at an angle of 30 degrees with split spruce root. They aresturdy and they are designed to catch are the largest of flatfish, bottomdwelling, routinely 20 to 100 pounds and possibly far larger. When the hook isin use, in deep, open waters, its carved arm is down, running roughly parallelwith the ocean floor, and the bone barb carries a strip of octopus as bait.
The Tlingits embellished their hookswith carved renderings of spirit helpers. The figure on the hook was believedby the halibut fishers as great help to humans and who penetrated the sacred realm beyond social boundariesand helped draw the halibut to the hook.
This hook measures 9 ¼” long x 5 ¾”high and was collected in Alaska by missionaries before 1906.
