FLORIDA

Shows Entire State As It Was During The Civil War

- MADE IN 1863 -

This is a very historic, beautifully hand-colored map of Florida made over a century and a half ago, during the American Civil War. This is a fairly large map, measuring approximately 17 inches by 13 inches, and it shows \"the Sunshine State\" in great detail, its different regions beautifully hand-colored in light pastel shades.

This map provides a cartographic portrait of what Florida was like a century and a half ago, with hundreds and hundreds of geographic features indicated in precise detail (see scans at the bottom of this page). Perhaps the most noticeable difference between today\'s Florida and the Florida of that past era is in south Florida, where there was, for example, no Broward County, no Palm Beach County, no Collier County, etc. – just massive Dade, Brevard and Monroe counties.Looking closer at sparsely settled south Florida, we also see that at the time this map was made, south Florida was a frontier region, just as much as was the \"Wild West.\" There were no railroads, just military roads. The entire region was dotted with military forts – dozens and dozens of them. The names of many of these forts are obscure today, but some would live on in the names of the communities that sprang up around them – Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and Fort Pierce, for example. And there are some great notations, such as \"Indian Hunting Grounds\" and an indication of an earlier battle with the Seminoles, with a crossed cavalry swords symbol. This map was created in 1863, and so dated at the bottom of the map, but it was printed a few years later without any updating. As a matter of fact, when this map was made in 1863 in New York, at a time when Florida was part of the Confederacy, it may be that news of changes in political boundaries within that state did not always get much attention in the North. Thus when Baker County was created in 1861, named for James McNair Baker, a Confederate senator, it was carved out of New River County, but on this map, created two years after that event, there is no Baker County and New River County is totally intact. This is a very historic map, highly displayable, and a great relic of Florida as it was a century and a half ago!
