Luxury Fountain Pen Storage and Display Chests

This over-sized chest was built in the USA by skilled wood-craftsmen in the 1940\'s or 1950\'s as a silverware storage chest for the Prestige Plate Company. The finger joint method of joinery was used for the corners for strength and stability.
This chest is made of solid Mahogany, measures 18 1/2\" x 11 1/2\" x 6\" and weighs an impressive 10 3/4 pounds. The stain is Espresso and the exterior is protected with no fewer than 15 coats of hand-rubbed polyurethane. All of the hardware is original.
The custom-built interior safely accommodates 22 pens in the main compartment and 20 in the drawer for a total of 42 and is lined with ultra-soft Parchment faux suede. The pen slots in this case are a generous 7/8\" wide on centers and 8 5/8\" long in the main compartment and 8 3/8\" in the drawer to easily handle most over-sized pens. The medallion is the semi-precious Ocean Chalcedony gemstone.
I could not find a quality, attractive and functional pen chest at an affordable price so I decided to make my own. Most of my cases are made from 30 to 100 -year-old vintage and antique silverware storage chests. I restore and re-furbish them into exquisite one-of-a-kind fountain pen storage/display chests of superior quality at an affordable price. Hand-Finished by Skilled Wood-CraftsmanI start with silverware storage cases, preferably vintage or antique, because they are generally made with better materials and workmanship. First, I take the case apart and remove all the interior materials. Then I strip the exterior of any decades old varnish, paint or stain and sand it by hand down to new wood to prepare it for staining. The stains and methods I use enhance the grains and the exterior is protected with at least 15 coats of hand-applied polyurethane. The case is then re-assembled. Because chests come in many sizes the interior is completely custom built by hand. The fabric is ultra-soft faux suede and the medallion is a semi-precious gemstone.To ensure the highest standard of quality, every process I use to re-furbish these elegant showpieces is completed entirely by hand. No shortcuts. No excuses.Many of the boxes I restore were originally made up to one hundred years ago. Most of the nicks, scratches and gouges (if there were any to begin with) have been completely repaired, but some will have small signs of wear and tear that was best not to attempt repair. This just adds to the beauty and individuality of each piece. The chests I refurbish had decades old factory finishes that cover most of the grain. I remove this opaque coloring and then sand the wood down to the natural grain. I use stains that enhance the beautiful grain instead of covering it. I am very particular about my work and I take a lot pride in the craftsmanship. These chests usually come to me in a well-used condition and can take several weeks to complete the metamorphosis from plain to beautiful.
