FRENCH VINTAGE ANTIQUE STONEWARE ALCOHOL BOTTLE HANDMADE RUSTIC COUNTRY FARMHOUSE COLLECTORS BOTTLE CERAMIC EARTHENWARE

This charming stoneware bottle was found in Northern France where we understand it was made.

Our research on this type of bottle has revealed lots of \"interesting information\" but we are are unsure of any. The stories include the following:

- We have been told this is an old wine or cider bottle,

- We have been told this is a bottle previously used to store calvados,

- We have been told that this type of bottle was made for farmers and they used to add teats to it and would use it to feed their lambs or calves when the mother was unable,

- We have been told that top quality wine would have been stored in these type of bottles,

- We have been told and have seen on other websites that these bottles date pre-1900.

We believe this bottle is very old. There is something in the bottle which is likely to be the cork. The bottle is handmade in the coiled pottery manner (when clay is rolled in a long sausage and wound around the base before being smoothed down at the sides). The sides are uneven and the coils are clearly visible including a dent in the side which would have occurred prior to being fired in the kiln. Unsurprisingly for its age the bottle does have some chips (see photos) but is not cracked. There is a stamp mark on the side of the bottle in a \"T\" shape which, regrettably, we have been unable to identify.

This bottle measures approximately:

- 9cm in diameter

- 27cm in height.

We believe collectors would love this bottle but equally it would be a very attractive piece in a rustic/country/farmhouse setting.
