This Silver & Cut-Glass Decanter by the House of Fabergé is mounted with a silver lid and handle. The fluted cylindrical body tapers upwards to a wide silver rim with a flat hinged cover. The most striking aspect, however, is the handle. Formed into the shape of a lizard, it is naturalistically chased with diamond-shaped scales along the body and legs, and broader scales distinguishing the belly. The creative way in which the handle is styled infuses the piece with a sense of dynamism. The lizard’s arched back forms the body of the handle, while its splayed feet secure the handle to the silver lid and the glass base; its long, curled tail, meanwhile, adds a decorative flourish. Gripping the side of the lid, it peers round towards the front of the decanter as if to observe the liquid being poured. Its open mouth echoes the parted lips of the decanter.
