Antique 19th Century American handmade splint basket in two color paint. This is truly an exceptional basket, featuring original paint in two colors. The exterior is a beautiful apple green, and the interior is a contrasting bittersweet orange/red. Either of these colors would make this a killer basket, but having both colors makes it extraordinary.

Aside from the color -- and it\'s impossible with this basket to ignore the color -- the shape and making are special. The top is oval and the bottom is rectangular, a difficult feat of weaving which gives a wonderful appearance. The two openwork handles are beautifully executed. The rim is wrapped. Overall, the basket is sturdy and solid.

The overall condition is excellent. There is a bit of paint wear, consistent with the basket\'s age. There are a few minor breaks in the splint which I have shown in closeup photos. There is also a bit of whitish residue on one side which can probably be removed.

The basket measures 12 3/4\" x 9\" x 4 1/4\"

This basket would grace even the finest collection of splint basketry or Early American antiques.
